Going Green: Indoor Plants

At Steemer of South Florida we spend a good deal of time discussing Air Quality. It’s our belief that a clean home and clean oxygen go hand and hand, not just for appearances but more importantly for your short-term & long-term health. The reality is, the air we are breathing is as important as the food we are eating, but how often are you thinking about it the same way you think about dinner? Bad air quality is a real concern and it costs Americans over $340 billion a year between treatment and lost productivity expenses.

Of course, the best way to know you’re breathing the cleanest air possible is to ensure your air filter and air ducts are clean, but what if I told you there’s an even better way to infuse cleaner, healthier oxygen into your home?

In the 80’s NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America were first looking for ways to purify the air in space facilities and found that the addition of certain plant life can not only purify, but also eliminate toxins within your home.

Instead of filling your homes air with more chemicals and cleaning products, go green. But be careful, not every plant works as a natural purifier, read our top 5 list below to find the best one for you!

  • Aloe Vera
Perfect for rooms that receive natural sunlight. Aloe Vera plants work to clear the air of Formaldehyde and benzene, which can derive from chemical-based cleaners and paints. Additionally, Aloe Vera is well known for the gel within its leaves because of its ability to treat cuts and burns.
  • The Spider Plant
This plant is known to be a breeze to grow and is super adaptable indoors. Not only that but the spider plant is even forgiving if you forget to water it AND it’s safe for pets if ingested. The spider plant purifies the air of harmful chemicals such as Formaldehyde, CO2 and xylene.
  • English Ivy
Great for rooms that don’t receive much light, the main thing you need to worry about is a daily watering and the English ivy is readyto work its magic. Like the others on this list. The English Ivy is great for cleaning the air of Benzene and formaldehyde, which is common in cleaning products, toilet paper, tissues and personal care products.
  • Golden Pathos
The perfect indoor plant that looks as good decoratively as it does functionally. One of our favorite things about indoor plants is that not only do they do an impressive job cleaning the air, they add a fresh look to your living space. The golden pathos does exactly that and cleans your air of Benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde.
  • Areca Palm
Rated as the most efficient air purifying plant by both NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, if there was one plant you wanted in your home you should make it the Areca Palm. This small tropical plant is a nice style choice and cleans all those harmful chemicals such as Carbon Monoxide, Benzene, and more.

Add a little green to your home this summer and enjoy a fresh home with cleaner oxygen. To be sure your home is producing the cleanest air imaginable call the experts at Steemer of South Florida today!
