Oh no! A red wine spill on the carpet? Don’t worry — there is a way to get it out, especially if you act fast. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A few clean white towels
- Baking soda
- Vacuum cleaner
- Spoon (metal or plastic)
- Cold water
- Liquid dishwashing soap
- Hydrogen peroxide
Ok, now that you have your materials, let’s get to removing the stain:
- Blot
the spill with a clean white towel as soon as you can. When you blot the spill,
you minimize the amount of acids and dyes from the wine that will work their
way into the carpet fibers.
- Generously
sprinkle baking soda onto the spill.
- Mix
the baking soda around the stained area with the back of the spoon. As the
baking soda absorbs the wine, it will turn red and clump.
- Vacuum
the clumped baking soda. Repeat the baking soda steps 2-4 until the baking soda
no longer absorbs the wine.
- Spray
the area with a solution of 0.5-1.0 tsp of liquid dishwashing soap and 2 cups
of cold water.
- Let
it sit for 1-2 minutes, agitating the area with the back of the spoon.
- Blot
with a clean white towel. The towel will show how much wine is being absorbed.
Repeat steps 5-7 until the towel is no longer absorbing any wine.
- Flush
and rinse the area with clean cold water and blot with a clean towel. Dry the
area as much as possible.
- Spray with hydrogen peroxide and let it dry.
